YOUR HOSTS

It fulfills Christoph and me, every day with joy, to welcome you to our little paradise in the heart of the Black Forest. Our Storchen is more than just a hotel for us – it is a project close to our hearts that we design as a family with a lot of love and personal touch. For us, the stork is a symbol of naturalness, coming home and loving care – values that we live in our house.

We don’t check in or out at the Storchen, but greet and say goodbye to friends. It would be nice if you feel part of the Storchen family during your stay and take this cozy feeling home with you.

We look forward to seeing you

The History of our House

17th century

The inn, today's “Storchen”, was first opened in the middle of the 17th century as the Gasthaus zum “kleinen Bären”.

1655 – 1664

From 1655 to 1664 it was run by Peter Farbet and after his death by his family, his widow “Bärentrude” and his younger son “Bärenmichele”. After he fell into bad company, stole a chalice from the collegiate church and fled Waldkirch, his mother was forced to sell the “kleinen Bären” to a merchant from Freiburg

1700 – 1705

After several changes of ownership (including to the tailor Galli Richenbach, who tailored and managed the “Storchen” at the same time for four years), the “kleinen Bären” became the inn “Zum Salmen” at the beginning of the 18th century – referring to the salmon that were still plentiful to fish in the Elz at that time. Joseph Hummel, the first “Salmen” innkeeper, served an average of 115 Saum of wine in the years 1700-1705 – this corresponded to 17,000 liters, an average of 50 liters per day

18th century

After further changes of ownership, it can be assumed that the “Zum Salmen” restaurant was closed at the end of the 18th century.

1864

In 1864, brewer Karl Hoch founded a brewery restaurant with its own brewery in the former “Salmen” and named it “Zum Storchen” because there was a stork's nest on the roof ridge at that time. Several brewers acquired the “Storchen” in the following years, including August Mutschler, who had his “Mutschler Bier” served there by various tapsters (tenants). Mutschler had a hand-forged inn sign with the stork as a symbol hung above the inn door – however, this was not to survive the impending turmoil of war.

1981

The inn remained in the hands of several “Mutschler generations” until it was acquired by Wilfried Oschwald in 1981. He converted the “Storchen” into a music and scene pub – many Waldkirch residents still revel in the memories of this “wild time”.

End of 1990

After being operated by various tenants, Wilfried Oschwald had the “Storchen” rebuilt at the end of the 90s – the entire structure was demolished except for the outer facade and rebuilt – it is thanks to his prudence and his historically conscious actions that the historical appearance of the “Storchen” has been preserved. Usable components such as ceiling beams were restored from the demolition material and integrated into the new building as historical substance. After a long search, the inn sign, which had been lost in the war, was also reconstructed and reattached.

2013 – 2014

In 2013, the large extension of a hotel wing with 22 new rooms, conference rooms and a wellness area began. On September 13, 2013, Christoph Trienen reopened the Restaurant I Hotel “Zum Storchen” as the operator. After a very good start, supported by our dear employees and guests, we successfully opened our new building in June 2014.

2019 – 2022

The Storchen is growing – in September 2019, the demolition of the old buildings in Runzweg, directly opposite our hotel entrance, began. After an exciting construction phase, we look forward to welcoming dear guests to our new house “Herrenmühle” with 23 feel-good apartments from May 2022!
